Who We Are

If we asked you, “Who are you?” you’d probably tell us something that has to do with one or all of 3 key factors. You’d tell us about your past experiences, your values and your purpose (or what motivates you). You might say, for example, “I grew up in Willow Grove as an only child of divorced parents. Now, I’m a single mom. I work as a teacher for special needs children.”

It’s no different for us. Those same factors have all worked together to shape CrossWay Community Church into who we are today.

Our History

CrossWay Community Church began as First Wesleyan Church over 80 years ago.

Our story begins on May 15, 1929 when a group of eighteen men and women met in the home of R. Ann Fryers with Rev. F. A. Butterfield, President of the Middle Atlantic States Conference of the Wesleyan Church of America. They felt God was leading them to start a church that would come to be known as the First Wesleyan Methodist Church of North Willow Grove. In the beginning, the church met at various residences close to where the current church building now stands at the corner of Mill Rd and Magnolia Ave in Willow Grove, PA.  It wasn’t until Easter Weekend, in April 1937, that the church building was built and dedicated by the church’s two women pastors, Rev. Mrs. Mary Whitney and her daughter, Rev. Marion Whitney.

With God’s faithfulness, First Wesleyan Church survived during the Great Depression in the 1930's, when the church treasury balance was at an all time low of  3 cents.

In the years since then, the church grew and various building additions and renovations were completed. We’ve also been blessed with many dedicated and beloved pastors who’ve helped to build this church spiritually into the place it is.  Through all of this, we've certainly faced our share of challenges. With God's help and healing, they've worked to make us stronger and more committed to the goal of reaching people with the good news about Jesus.

In April 2011, a new page in our history was launched as First Wesleyan Church officially became CrossWay Community Church. Along with a new name, comes a new vision, led by Pastor Michael Saunders, to become the best church for the community.

What are the Beliefs of CrossWay Community Church?

As you read in our history, we recently changed our name to CrossWay Community Church. What we haven’t changed are the same core Wesleyan values that our church was founded on. CrossWay Community Church is part of the Wesleyan denomination. (A denomination is a Christian organization who are united in beliefs and practices.) The Wesleyan Church is an evangelical Protestant denomination with nearly 400,000 constituents in 5,000 churches and missions in 80 countries of the world. It has its roots in John Wesley's Methodism. Want to know more about the Wesleyan Church and what we believe? Click "More Info".

What do Wesleyans Believe?

We believe that the Bible is the highest source of written authority of God's plan for His people. Our beliefs, practices, and priorities are to be anchored in clear biblical teachings. Jesus Christ is the defining feature of God's will for all humankind. Christ is both example and strength as Wesleyans pursue integrity, excellence, faith, hope, and love.

The Weslyan Church focuses on training our members in spiritual growth and holy living to be more like Jesus in all that we do (discipleship) and to share his message with the world (evangelism).  (Note: A Disciple is someone who follows Jesus by surrending to Him as Lord and Savior of their life and seeks to know more about who He is. Jesus' disicples live a life that is changed by Jesus and want to share what He's done for them with others.)

Our denomination exists to serve the local congregations. They recognize that local churches, like CrossWay Community Church, are the most fundamental and strategic points of evangelism and discipleship and continually strive to find ways to support and strengthen us.

Wesleyans desire to be leaders in serving by doing so willingly, obediently and lovingly.  We also believe that there is there is intrinsic value in every person and strive for unity, through Christ, to overcome any differences in personality, culture, race, talents, and perspectives.

Our Purpose
Why does CrossWay Community Church exist? photo

Why does CrossWay Community Church exist?

For all the prosperity and promise that America holds, for all its wealth and unlimited opportunity, people in our workplaces, neighborhoods and even among our family and friends have lives that are broken. Broken marriages, lost homes, hungry children, financial struggles, health issues, drug and alcohol addiction…the list of needs seems endless. But for every need out there, God already has someone or something in mind to meet it. He’s given someone the time, the tools, the talent, the money, the idea, or the chance to do something about it. No act is insignificant. No effort is wasted. God can use it all to build His Kingdom. At CrossWay Community Church, we want to develop and equip our members to be used by God to meet the needs of a broken and hurting world, starting right here in our own community.

Our mission, the one thing that drives all that we do, is helping people make life work by engaging every member of our church to impact the surrounding community for the growth of God’s kingdom. We want to see broken lives transformed by God’s love. Our goal is to be the best church for the community by combining the good news of the gospel with the good deeds that Jesus would lead us to do.

For over 80 years God has blessed the people of CrossWay Community Church. What started as an innovative idea —a Wesleyan church built to share God’s love with the people of Willow Grove back in 1929 — is still innovative today. People everywhere still need the transforming power of God’s love. We invite you to join us in this journey.
